Katy Hurley traveled with ten high school students and other adults from Atlanta’s Lutheran Church of the Redeemer to Managua, Nicaragua. The group worked at the Christian Academy of Los Torres (CALT), located in poverty-stricken neighborhood where unemployment, drugs and gang activity are rampant. CALT, where Katy also serves at a board member, is an elementary school which provides free, local education and has a literacy rate of 100%. The group delivered school supplies and sports equipment, built bookshelves and painted rooms in the school. They also donated clothes and toys to public hospitals and gave toys, built bookshelves and painted at a local orphanage.
